Hypothyroid Pregnancy: Danger to Mother and Newborn

Hypothyroid pregnancy is the keyword used.

Hypothyroid pregnancy is a common endocrine disorder in women during the child bearing period. This is not a disease but a condition that may affect the pregnant women and the baby. Those who are suffering from diabetes and other autoimmune diseases are more prone to hypothyroid pregnancy. It may affect the general health of both the mother and baby.

Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs when the concentration of thyroid hormone falls below normal. This condition slows down the general metabolism of the body.

Causes of hypothyroid pregnancy

The most common cause of hypothyroid pregnancy is an auto immune disorder, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It can also be due to the inadequate treatment of already existing hypothyroidism or due to the over treatment of hyperthyroidism. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can also lead to pregnancy hypothyroidism.

Pregnancy hypothyroid effect on mother

IF the hypothyroidism during pregnancy is not treated adequately, the mother may present with the following symptoms:

1. Anemia- decreased RBC

2. Myopathy- muscular pain and weakness

3. pre-eclampsia

4. Congestive heart failure

5. Post partum hemorrhage

6. high risk of miscarriage

7. If untreated, women are at high risk for hypertension near to delivery time and also the there are chances of preterm delivery.

Pregnancy hypothyroid effect on baby

Thyroid hormone is important for the proper development of brain of the baby. Babies born with congenital defect in the thyroid gland may show neurological development abnormalities. Children born to hypothyroid mother show lower levels of IQ level than that of a normal mother. If the disease is identified and treated immediately after birth, this developmental abnormality can be prevented.

The baby depends on mother during the first 12 weeks for thyroid hormone. So the mother needs to have the adequate amount of thyroid hormone during the first trimester. By the end of the third month, the baby starts producing thyroid hormone of its own. However, the iodine for the proper function of the thyroid gland of the fetus will be absorbed from the mother.

Managing hypothyroid pregnancy

Regular checkups are necessary once you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism during pregnancy. If you were diagnosed hypothyroid before pregnancy, continue the medications seeking advice from doctor. As per the WHO suggestions, women need to consume more iodine during pregnancy. This can reduce the risk of hypothyroidism.

If you are taking prenatal vitamins, consume the vitamin pill 3-4 hours before the thyroid medication as the vitamin and iron may interfere with the thyroid medicine. Light exercise help to reduce the muscle fatigue due to hypothyroid pregnancy. Regular exercise also helps to control your weight gain. Regular monitoring of thyroid levels need to be done at least once in three months. The doctor can adjust your medicine dosage after seeing the lab report. As hypothyroid pregnancy may produce long lasting ill effects in the mother and the baby, it is better to diagnose and treat it at an earlier stage. If you are diagnosed to have hypothyroidism before getting pregnancy, control the condition first and then try to conceive.
